Capturing Stories with Your Phone

A free, step-by-step course for people who work in aged care.

This course is for beginners. You don’t need to be creative or good with technology to make a useful video.

By the end, you’ll be able to plan, film and finish a simple interview video on your phone – one that looks and sounds clear and needs very little editing.

It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, and you can do it over several short sessions. Come back to any step whenever you need a refresher.

You don’t need any experience. You just need to start.

The stories you capture can help older people find your social support groups, show families what you offer, encourage new volunteers, attract staff, and show decision-makers the difference your work makes.

What you’ll be able to do

  • Plan an interview that draws out a genuine story
  • Set up your phone so your video looks and sounds clear
  • Choose a spot with good light and sound
  • Film a relaxed, natural interview
  • Trim and finish your video, all on your phone
  • Save, back up and share your video

What you’ll need

  • A smartphone
  • Earbuds or headphones
  • At least 5 GB of free storage on your phone

That’s it. Some optional gear can help, and we’ll show you what – but you can do the whole course with just your phone.
