Understanding hoarding & environmental neglect in practice

  • Darebin Arts Centre 401 Bell Street Preston, VIC (map)

If you support people affected by hoarding or environmental neglect, it can be hard to know how to respond. This in-person workshop explores why changing hoarding behaviour can be difficult, alongside respectful engagement, assessment, practical strategies and organisational responses.

What you’ll learn

  • Understand why hoarding behaviour can be difficult to change, including the impact of trauma and frontal lobe changes.

  • Explore trauma-informed approaches and how respectful language can improve engagement with people affected by hoarding or environmental neglect.

  • Consider the challenges associated with animal hoarding, children and hoarding, and environmental neglect (squalor).

  • Explore assessment approaches, including the Environmental Cleanliness and Clutter Scale.

  • Understand the involvement of Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), the DFFH Make Safe Response, and the impact of unsightly properties on housing agreements.

  • Identify practical strategies for supporting people affected by hoarding and reviewing progress, care plans and goals.

  • Consider organisational tasks and how workplace champions can support good practice.
